What size storage unit do I need? A Saraland guide
The short answer: A 10×10 holds about a one-bedroom apartment. A 10×15 holds about a two-bedroom home. A 10×20 is about the size of a one-car garage and holds about a three-bedroom home. Not sure? Call Deanna at (251) 675-4315 and tell her what you’re storing.
Most people need less space than they think if they pack well, and more than they think if they don’t. Here’s how to pick.
What fits in each size at Saraland Mini Storage
| Size | About the size of | What usually fits | Type here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10×10 100 sq ft | A small bedroom | A one-bedroom apartment: bed and dresser, couch, small table, 15–20 boxes | Climate-controlled and drive-up |
| 10×15 150 sq ft | A large bedroom | A two-bedroom home: two bed sets, sofa and loveseat, dining set, 20–30 boxes | Climate-controlled |
| 10×20 200 sq ft | A one-car garage | A three-bedroom home: several bed sets, appliances, patio furniture, 30–50 boxes | Drive-up |
Units have about 8 feet of height, so stacking is what makes the space work. Put heavy boxes on the bottom and stand mattresses and couches on end.
A quick check: your moving truck
If everything fits in a 12-foot truck, a 10×10 is usually enough. A 16-foot truck usually means a 10×15. A 22-foot truck usually means a 10×20.
Too big or too small?
The most common mistake we see is renting too small and stuffing things in so you can’t reach the back. If you’ll need to get to things during the rental, leave a walkway down the middle and put what you’ll need most at the front. If you’re just parking a household during a move, pack it tight to the ceiling and you can often go a size smaller.
Climate-controlled or drive-up?
South Alabama humidity is hard on anything made of wood, leather, fabric or paper, and on electronics. Climate control keeps temperature and humidity steady, which helps prevent mildew, warping and rust.
- Choose climate-controlled for furniture, mattresses, photos, documents, electronics and anything you’d hate to throw away.
- Choose drive-up for tools, lawn equipment, plastic bins, patio furniture and business inventory that can handle heat. You can back right up to the door to load.
Either way, store things clean and completely dry. Use plastic bins instead of cardboard, and cover furniture with sheets or moving blankets, not tight plastic wrap, which traps moisture.
